Building an effective workforce does not mean just focusing on having the correct number of employees in a role, it is also crucial to assist these employees, their managers and other support staff in handling a diverse and dynamic culture where learning is the core element. Empowering employees to educate each other and to use their specific strengths and weaknesses to their advantage in order to catapult the organization forward is the key to effectiveness. Strengths and weaknesses are natural and creating the culture that adapts and grows from these traits is important.

Talent continues to be a business's first priority. Meanwhile, the workforce is undergoing a dramatic shift as baby boomers retire leaving many organizations with major gaps in their talent. This is due to the simple fact that there will be less talented people to fill the roles that the baby boomers are vacating. It is going to affect employee/manager relations, opportunities for growth, employee development, retirement issues and, essentially the way we work together as a team. Building an effective workforce is something that needs to be planned now to deal with these future concerns.

As this new shortage of talented people nears, it is of utmost importance that businesses develop a culture that is engaging and welcoming to talented people from every background, level of experience and education. Failing to create this culture will immediately turn them away.

At the same time, managers must create the ability to inspire and encourage inspiration. Some tactics on how to do this includes sharing information and knowledge, working together to create new ideas and having people collaborate on projects bringing unique skills and experience to the table. The better a manager understands how an employee functions, the more effective they can be in inspiring them. Building an effective workforce and workforce planning tools allow managers to learn more about the employees, characteristics about them, how they function, relationships, and provides other information that the manager can use to create more synergy within their team. The benefits of this include:

* Resolve, remedy or repair ineffective or damaged working relationships
* Improving communication between employees, managers and other support staff
* Increasing output or improving productivity
* Identifying potential issues and being able to proactively avoid conflicts

Simple stated, workforce planning along with assessments of current employees and potential new hires can assist in building an effective workforce. In fact, the majority of problems within organizations are caused between employee and manager relationships, which is why it is incredibly important to tackle any issue before they occur. Managers who do not 'get it' and are unable to inspire their teams now certainly will not know how to handle, manage and inspire their teams under the changing workforce.
